River Heads is a Southern suburb of Hervey Bay and is known as the gateway to Fraser Island as River Heads is the departure point for ferry services to Fraser Island; the ferry ride from River Heads to Fraser Island is a popular way for tourists to access the island’s unique landscapes.

River Heads is situated along the Great Sandy Strait, providing opportunities for boating, fishing, and water-based activities. Anglers often enjoy fishing in the strait’s waters, which are home to a wide variety of fish species. The waters around River Heads and Fraser Island are part of the Great Sandy Marine Park. This protected area is known for its diverse marine life, including dolphins, dugongs, turtles, and a range of fish species and therefore it is a popular spot for snorkeling, diving, and wildlife watching.

While a quieter residential area, River Heads does offer some local facilities, including a general store, a chemist and bottle shop as well as a cafe and a community hall. The boat ramp has recently been upgraded and is very popular with those who want to launch their boats into the waters of the Great Sandy Strait.
